Native Plants - Hardy Hibiscus

If you like the beauty of tropical hibiscus but want a hibiscus that doesn't freeze, the Hardy Hibiscus is great for adding color to any landscape. This is actually a distant cousin of the Blooming Cotton. Hardy Hibiscus is a wonderful large-leaved, largebloomed plant that adds color to beds, nooks and corner plantings, mass plantings, or planters. It works in several locations and is easy to plant and maintain. Plant early spring to early summer in locations that receive morning to midday full sun with afternoon shade or dappled sun/shade all day long. Soil needs to stay moist, but not too wet (water as needed). Pruning by the end of the winter or after a hard freeze will help new buds develop again in spring.
