Halloween Safety
During 1999-2002, decorations for special events accounted for an estimated 1,100 reported home structure fires per year in the U.S. The majority involved candles as the heat source. These fires caused six deaths and $16 million in direct property damage per year.

- Purchase only costumes, wigs and props labeled "flameresistant" or "flame-retardant." Avoid billowing or long trailing features.
- Provide children with lightweight flashlights to carry for lighting or as part of their costume.
- Dried flowers, cornstalks and crepe paper are highly combustible. Keep these away from heat sources, including light bulbs.
- Use flashlights or battery-operated candles when illuminating Jack-O-Lanterns. If you use candles, use long fireplace matches and keep the Jack-O-Lanterns away from combustibles, doorways and walkways.
- Instruct children to stay away from open flames or other heat sources. Be sure they know how to Stop, Drop and Roll.
Be careful and have a scare-ific Halloween this year.
