Dear Citizens,
We are finally enjoying some cool weather and smells of autumn. We have been so fortunate this year with a wet spring and not too hot summer. Now if we can just get through the winter without an ice storm, it will be great. We do have lots of acorns everywhere and that generally means a cold, cold winter.
Hopefully you all read the Budget issue we mailed out in early October. This is truly the best year financially in Euless history. Our sales and property taxes were up and the council lowered the tax rate two cents.
We have many good improvements to look forward to this year. We plan to enlarge the library and add a historical room. Many citizens have given items of Euless history to our Historical Preservation Board and that group has really worked long hours to put together many interesting items of history. We also plan to enlarge the Texas Star Conference Centre and probably start the renovations early next year. The Conference Centre has been a real plus for Euless and after ten years we see the need for more room.
We will be looking for additional space for our senior citizens center. We have outgrown the Simmons Center as our active seniors are participating more and more in our activities. They are a wonderful group of citizens that are truly enjoying life with friends.
We have several new housing developments under construction and so far have not seen a downturn in the housing market. As you know, the Lowe's development on Glade and Hwy 121 is rapidly building out with more shops and restaurants. Across the highway, south of the Target store, the land has been cleared and the owners hope to start construction very soon. It will be the largest mixed-use development in Euless with many fine shops, restaurants, and later homes. It will have landscaping throughout the center.
We have so many activities coming up and we encourage you to read through this issue and participate in some of the various events. We also encourage you to get a library card and enjoy all the events there for all ages.
Boards and Commission members have been selected for the up coming year. We are so proud of our citizens that continue to devote their time, talents and energy to volunteer for our city. There are so many ways to volunteer and Jerry Poteet in our Parks and Leisure Services department can show you all the opportunities where can volunteer. And if you have not gone through our Police and Fire academies, you've missed a treat. Our Fire and Police alumni groups do so much for our Police and Fire Departments from watering plants in the Police Building to riding out with Citizens on Patrol (COPS) in the beautiful new car furnished by Allen Samuels Dodge. The Fire alumni are always there to assist our firemen whenever and wherever. Many, many thanks.
Thanks to all of you for caring for our city in many ways. TOGETHER WE ARE PREPARING A BRIGHT FUTURE FOR ALL CITIZENS.
